I come from Thailand and have resided in Vietnam for six months, from
November 2014 to May 2015. Before that, I have spent six weeks in Phnom
Penh. From this constant journey, I realize the connection between Thailand,
Cambodia and Vietnam.
The cultural inheritance has passed on in various forms in the land, where the
past inhabitants have once shared, used and together fought for. The wars
caused by colonialism and the internal conflicts have left the natives' minds
with many wounds, from which they need to learn. These entwined incidents
have formed not only the diversity but also the desire for acceptance of
different races, ethnicities and existences.
This work explores places in Vietnam through a conversation between the
people and me. I venture out to places where I have thought belongs to
anyone and everyone such as temples (of all religions), public parks and
canal sidewalks. I ask the pedestrians a rhetorical question to find out a place
each of them wishes to own.
This whimsical question also coaxes the respondents to fantasize their
dreams of possession.
The answers reflect the transient change and relocation inflicted by the
invasion in Vietnam by many countries.
The installation is fermented from the conversations and my journey to
photograph the places, which later become the foundation of my paintings
